Dee vs. Badfic

Why is doing what you like — rather than what other people like — such a threatening idea?

Well, that’s a bit vague, isn’t it? You could apply that one pretty much anywhere; I’ve personally had arguments along those lines about everything from webdesign to life in general, so let’s narrow the field.

Why is writing what you like such a threatening idea?

Hi, my name is Alis and I write badfic. I even named my fic site that, just in case anyone was unsure. I love badfic or, rather, I love bad ideas. Clich

    You know what I like?

Putting my favorite pair of my favorite fandom in random, everyday situations, and (attempting, and failing, regrettably at) writing that. Probably because the two characters in question will find awkwardness, lulz and likely a spontaneous act of affection in no matter what they do, and jeez is it fun. I’ve heard it’s a Bad Idea to do everydaywhatevers, or at least random oneshots that end in fluff and other such things along those lines, but I can’t remember where so who knows what Joe Internet Guy that was.

Not terribly long ago, someone in said fandom (yeah, we both know which one I’m rambling about here) put up a high school AU, and I thought it was an awfully good start. And my fandom’s so dinky that I can subscribe to the ff.net RSS feed and maybe hope to see three updated/added stories a year, so when I read through it and saw no reviews that day, I was like HELL YES SOMETHING DIFFERENT YOU’RE AWESOME PLS CONTINUE.

But they haven’t yet. I hope they do, but for some reason my Amy sense tingles that maybe they thought the idea was dumb just because maybe the author saw people griping about hackneyed high school AUs, then dropped it.

    *Bites nails.*

Haha, yeah high school AUs and daily life fluff are pretty reviled in certain quarters. I have to admit I’m not a fan of the high school AU myself (about the closest I come is the Smallville college age fic, which are usually only minor tangential AUs), but I do rather like me some daily life fluff; “http://badfic.void-star.net/fic/authority/importance-of-teeth ]” class=”ext”>Importance of Teeth” comes immediately to mind.

The main problem I have with daily life fics is when they get over saccharine — usually involving an otherwise stoic character gazing out over some kind of holiday family meal making wistful internal narrative — but that’s really a problem of authorial characterisation rather than the genre itself. And I’ve read some amazing daily life stuff (Superman making toast is always good for lulz).

I swear the whole thing about poo-pooing certain genres comes from that same pool of literary snobbery that makes people write really long, tedious, angst-driven Big Literature fanfic. And, okay, it’s nice if that’s your thing and all but… don’t try and convince me it has any more inherent worth than any other story, because I will laugh at you behind my postmodern relativist textual interpretation.

Kinda like the roleplayers who think Big Huge 5-Liners A Good Player Make, or, better yet, Unmakes? (Or, everyone’s in a genre who thinks everyone else’s genre is Wrong. It’s like religion!)

I actually have been secretly feeling like a jerk, because when I first read “high school AU” in the fic’s summary, I thought oh wow, THAT’S real original, but I’m glad I was the jerk who didn’t think she’d like it yet read it out of interest in ANYTHING related to the fandom anyway.

Haha, yeah; just like them. :P

I’m pretty sure that all my favourite fics are based on big fat clich
