vs.tweet v1.1

Well, because 1863 asked for it, here’s the script I use to crosspost Twitter to my journals. The set-up is a bit tricky, but only because it requires a cron job and I think most people probably don’t touch those. But they’re not scary, honest.

Anyway, until I get a proper page for it set up at sk.ODE, here’s the install instructions.

  1. Download vs.tweet.
  2. Edit the config values in twitter.php. Take special note of line 21 and line 28.
  3. Upload everything to your server somewhere.
  4. Set up the following cron job (your cPanel should have an option to help you with this; if you don’t have access to a cPanel, it’s likely your host does): 0 * * * * php -q /path/to/your/twitter.php/password Make sure to change the path and set ‘password’ to the value you set on line 21 of twitter.php.
  5. Note that the update on the cron and $MINS in twitter.php must agree. By default it’s set to update once every hour; you can make this shorter or longer if you know what you’re doing.
  6. Make some tweets.
  7. Wait until your update time.
  8. Enjoy!
Update: v1.1.1 (8th April, ’08)
  • Fixed the incorrect truncation of tweets when removing the username.
  • Apparently you can’t run CLI php with query string arguments. Let’s try this instead.
