Fanlistings

To be honest, I'm not a massive fan of fanlistings. I think the idea wanted to be good, but somewhere the execution kinda crumpled into a place for people to just spam their names on a list with no real purpose. Nevertheless, I do run some, and I've even (re-)written a management script. Back in the old days of sk.log v0.5, I had about a bajillion of these things (since the CMS used to manage them for me), but... what was the point?

Instead, I've decided to use an idea I stole off Belinda; have a small page with a bare minimum of fanlistings, as well as a description about why I joined each one. More meaningful? I think so!

Art

  • anthropormorphic art
Anthro Art Back when I was a wee little tyke, I had this Indiana Jones/Fern Gully crossover character. Her name was Indiarna Bones, and she was a bat (drawn a la Batty from the aforementioned movie). I didn't actually know that there was a name for this kind of art until about a decade later, when I was introduced to the wonderful world of the anthro thanks to the magic of the Internets. (self-owned)

Books & Comics

  • The Authority
The Authority Plagued by terrible writing and even worse art, nevertheless this still remains the only superhero comic that I really actually like. Plus it doesn't hurt at all that it has my absolutely most favouritest of all time literary couple, Apollo and the Midnighter. Mmm, delicious fanservice.
  • Discworld
Discworld There is a lot of poorly-written, unimaginative fantasy out there. Terry Pratchett does not write it. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Discworld series is the most imaginative and well-written fantasy series out there, and it's a shame that a lot of people look down their noses at it as they think it's 'parody'. It is, in a way, but it's also... look, just go read it for godssakes. Interestingly, the first Disc book I picked up, Witches Abroad, I put down again almost instantly. I revisited the series about a couple of years later with Interesting Times and haven't looked back since.

Gaming

  • Furcadia
Furcadia Yes, I admit it; I'm a dirty furry. For those of you who've never heard of it (which is probably most of you), Furcadia likes to bill itself as the 'longest-running MMO", which is both true (it's been around since 1997) and a load of crap (it's not an MMO; it's a graphical chat client). The 'game' has had pretty much zero technology upgrades since '97, although ironically the ancient engine makes it quite easy to design maps -- known as 'dreams' -- for. I have a whole domain dedicated to the horror at FURCED!net.
  • Illidan Stormrage
Illidan Anyone who has known me for a little while will start to get the (correct) suspicion that I have this... thing for guys with horns, hooves and wings. Well, this is where that... thing comes from. Illidan, you were my First True Videogame Love. (self-owned)
  • World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft Ah, WoW. To say that I'm obsessed with this game is a bit like saying that fish sort of like water. I'm a Blizzard-in-general and Warcraft-in-particular fan since way back when I was a wee girl and first played WarCraft II in the store. I was hooked instantly, so when I heard they were making a Warcraftverse MMORPG I nearly wet myself in glee. I first got a taste of it during the Stress Test, and never really looked back.

Miscellaneous

  • Belinda (immortalised.net)
Belinda (I stole her idea for my fanlistings page, so I figured I'd better join her fan club.) I don't actually remember how I met Belinda on The Internets anymore, though suspect it was through one of those comment rotation sites. Either way, I was an instant fan; she's articulate and curious and values critical thinking! I think I'm in love.
  • Loki
Belinda It is an unfortunate truth of my life: I love Loki. Hell, if I actually believed in gods, I'd be a Lokean. To be completely honest, I'm not even sure where this fascination comes from, only that it started when I was about 14 or so. I've had a fictional characterisation of said God banging about in my head since then, resulting in all kinds of trouble. (self-owned)
  • PHP
PHP I first encountered PHP back in, erm, circa 2000 as part of the crescent community system rewrite for sailormoon.org. I'd had some minimal experience with programming prior to that, but nothing major. I did a bit of auditing of the crescent code, but it really wasn't until I started to write sk.log -- my weblog/CMS system -- that I really got it. Nowadays, anything you want in PHP, I can write. Most things I do are pretty bog standard script-to-database interfaces, but I've done some funky things in the past like image manipulation that make me sit back, crack my knuckles and think, "Damn... I'm good."

Movies & TV

  • Doctor Who
Doctor Who This is the greatest show ever made; hands down, no argument. I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't obsessed with this show; as a wee little girl I used to sit on my dad's lap and watch it. When I was a little older -- and the show was off-air -- I used to obsessivley read the books (I was an OrmanBlum fan). I squee'd over the telemovie -- even with all its faults -- and even ran a fansite for a while in an attempt to bring the awareness of Who to a wider (read: American) audience. Then 2005 rolled around, and the Russell T. Davies reboot. I was in love all over again. Of course, now everyone else was as well... For the record, I love Four (he was the one I grew up with), Six (so crazy), Eight (so cute), Nine (so prickly) and Ten (so fanservicy).
